I was the perfect student. AP courses, a high GPA, and a color-coded planner. My worth was defined by grades and test scores, and I was taught that this was the path to success.

But when I graduated, I had a shocking realization: I didn’t know who I was. I only knew how to perform, please, and perfect. My nervous system was constantly dysregulated, always measuring myself against others and asking, "Am I good enough?"

When I became a teacher in 2010, that question followed me. But teaching also showed me a profound truth: the current education system values measurable outcomes over authentic discovery. Students chase grades and test scores, while teachers are pulled in countless directions to meet those expectations. In the process, we lose time for the curiosity and imagination that lead to a child’s true, authentic path.

Now, with rising rates of youth sadness, depression, and suicide, top medical associations have declared a national emergency. The root cause of many of these struggles is the disconnect between chasing outcomes and living an authentic life.

When a child's nervous system is dysregulated, they can't learn, no matter how good the lesson plan is.

It’s time to shift our focus. It’s time to move beyond compliance and cultivate curiosity—helping students and teachers regulate their nervous systems and discover their own definition of success.
